THE HISTORY OF THE DARK ‘N STORMY

On a trip to the Caribbean, we were introduced to a fresh and spicy cocktail we’ve never tried: a Dark and Stormy. It’s a delicious blend of dark rum and ginger beer that’s easy to make, foolproof, and refreshing. There’s a difference between calling this cocktail Dark ‘n Stormy vs Dark and Stormy or even Dark & Stormy. To be called an “official” Dark ‘n Stormy, the only rum that can be used is Goslings Black Seal Rum. Goslings registered the trademark name in 1991, stating that a drink called a Dark ‘n Stormy cocktail must be made using Goslings Black Seal Rum.

In 1806, James Gosling, son of a wine and spirits merchant, set out from England on the ship, Mercury, bound for America. After 91 days in the Atlantic, the ship’s charter expired due to a becalmed sea, so the crew sailed for the nearest dock in Bermuda. When James and his crew finally arrived, James was so enthralled by Bermuda, he decided this is where he wanted to set up shop, and in 1857, began the production of rum. Over the years they refined their process and eventually created Goslings Black Seal rum, known for it’s rich, full-bodied, and balanced flavors. The island also produced ginger beer, popular with the British navy, which helped to ease seasickness. As the legend goes, when mixed together, a sailor said the drink looked like “the color of a cloud only a fool or a dead man would sail under.” Thus the name Dark ‘N Stormy.

WHAT IS THE BEST RUM FOR A DARK AND STORMY?

One of the world’s best dark rums, Goslings rum tastes like no other. It’s rich, smooth, and full-bodied, founded in Bermuda by the Gosling brothers. This dark rum is our favorite, however you can obviously use your favorite brand of dark rum.

The original recipe is simple: 2 ounces Goslings Black Seal Rum, and 4-5 ounces of ginger beer. Fill a highball glass with ice, add Goslings Stormy Ginger Beer (the stormy) and top with Goslings Black Seal Rum (the dark). Garnish with a lime wedge (optional). That’s the way it’s typically served in Bermuda. Pure and simple.

OUR KETO-FRIENDLY VERSION

To make this drink as low carb as possible but without losing any of it’s delicious flavor, we replaced the ginger beer with a no-sugar diet ginger beer. There are plenty of diet brands available – we use either Barritts or Goslings. We also add fresh ginger  (strained off so no pieces of ginger are left behind) but the warmth, spice, and extra flavor remain and blend into the cocktail beautifully. For a little extra tang and freshness, we also add fresh lime juice. Both are optional, and amounts vary according to taste.

Our Keto Dark and Stormy recipe is very similar to our Keto Moscow Mule. The difference: Dark and Stormy uses rum, and Moscow Mule use vodka. A 7.5 ounce serving of our Low Carb Keto Dark and Stormy contains 1 gram of net carbs, a savings of 12 net carbs! How is this possible? The top 2 ingredients come in at zero carbs: Dark rum and Diet Ginger Beer. The 1 oz of fresh lime juice adds 2g net carbs, which divided in half is 1g. We discard the ginger after infusing the flavors into the cocktail, leaving us with a total carb count of 1g net carbs, and taking only 5 minutes from start to delicious sip!

CAN I USE DIET GINGER ALE INSTEAD OF DIET GINGER BEER?

Well you can, but we might have to turn you in to the Dark ‘N Stormy police.

wink
We suggest you stick with the tried and true ginger beer. Both are non-alcoholic and bubbly, however ginger ale has a milder, sweeter flavor – basically it’s simply a ginger flavored soft drink. Ginger beer adds a strong, spicy finish to this cocktail.
