For more years that I can remember, Friday nights meant family, friends and our favorite Mexican restaurant. We feasted on chips and salsa and downed the obligatory margaritas. After a long work week, it was our favorite stress-reducing therapy.
But that was before keto. And in our family, things have changed. I no longer have constant food cravings or sugar crashes. And I don’t order the sugary premix concoctions served at restaurants anymore.
What to do? No margaritas on Friday nights? Never fear! My favorite bartender, husband Mike, got to work. After a couple of tries he reached perfection. In fact, I prefer the taste of these margaritas to any other. If we happen to be out, Mike talks directly to the bartender (always a good person to friend) and they’re made exactly to our specifications.
The name says it all. In the Robach family, Mike’s margaritas are legendary. When our kids come to visit, you’ll hear Amy and Eric say, “Uh oh. Look out – Dad’s margaritas are killer.”
Pure spirits like vodka, tequila, gin, whisky contain zero, yes zero, net carbs. Since I’m not the kind of girl who enjoys shooters, I prefer to drink them in a cocktail, which makes spirits more palatable. But the ingredients used to make most cocktails contain lots of sugar and carbs, like soft drinks, juice, tonic water and sweet liquors. It’s not rocket science to figure out how to reduce or eliminate sugar without compromising on taste. This Killer Margarita is a fine example.
They’re a breeze to make and are hands-down the most fabulous, delicious, (and potent) margaritas you’ll ever taste. Remember, when you’re on a keto diet, it takes a lot less alcohol to get intoxicated. Why alcohol tolerance levels drop on a keto diet isn’t yet completely understood, but it’s real for most of us, so take it easy!
Serve them over a full glass of ice cubes or add a splash of sparkling water or lime-flavored LaCroix to lessen their potency.
Ready? Set? Cheers!
Mike’s Keto Killer Margaritas

These are hands-down the most fabulous, delicious, low-carb margaritas you'll ever drink. Turn fresh lime juice, cointreau, and agave blanco tequila into heavenly margaritas in just 5 minutes!
- 5 ounces of 100% Agave Blanco Tequila. (Mike uses Silver Patron or Don Julio.)
- 2 ounces Cointreau
- 2 ounces freshly-squeezed lime juice
- Pour 3 ingredients into a shaker full of ice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Serve over ice with a lime wedge.
These margaritas are quite sour, so I like to sprinkle Truvia on top and stir it in. I use about 1/4 teaspoon. Mike likes his without sweetener. Let your taste buds be your guide!
4 servings
To make a spicy Margarita, would adding some slices of jalapeno still keep this keto? Asking for a friend, me, I’m a friend.
You and I think alike, Bernice! My husband and I like just about everything spicy, and yes, putting a few jalapeño slices in the margaritas would only add less than 1 carb. We love to infuse bottles of tequila with jalapeños and let them steep for a few days. Spicy tequila is a perfect addition to these margaritas! Thanks for a great question and for visiting!
Killer is the. key word here! Delicious!
Not sweet!!
Hi, Sharon! Yes….they are killer, aren’t they. ; ) So happy you enjoyed them. I sprinkle a little Truvia on the top when the limes are super tart. Thanks so much for visiting the site!
I have a question. If there are only 9 oz of fluid in this recipe and it makes 4 drinks then is a serving only 2.25 ounces? Thank you.
Hi, Karen. Yes, it makes 4 servings. The ingredients are shaken with ice, and so water is infused into the drink. Also you pour the drink over an ice-filled 10 oz serving glass, which takes up a lot of volume and slowly melts into the margarita. This is a potent drink, so you want to sip. Thank you for a great question!
Delicious!
Thank you! Couldn’t agree more.
