WHAT DOES A WHITE RUSSIAN COCKTAIL TASTE LIKE?
Full transparency here. Up until last week, I’d never tasted a White Russian. My husband, Mike, made one for an after dinner drink, using Kahlua brand of coffee liqueur, vodka, and heavy cream. He asked me to give it a try, so I gave it a sip, and wow, I’ll have to say it was a beauty. It’s decadently creamy, with subtle coffee and caramel flavors. Oh, and it’s sweet. Like really sweet. So I did the math: Vodka, zero carbs; heavy cream, less than 1 carb; Kahlua, 22 carbs. Yikes.
Mike, the cocktail connoisseur that he is, decided this would be a great low carb cocktail by substituting the sugar-laden brands you find on the liquor shelves with our own sugar-free homemade coffee liqueur. I did an exhaustive search on the web, and yes, there are tons of low carb coffee liqueur recipes already created. But did I really want to start distilling liquor in my basement? I mean, is it legal? Turns out it is. After a few tries, we think we’ve got it right. Here’s the recipe for our Best Keto Low Carb Coffee Liqueur. You can make it ahead of time, or do as we do, and use it only 24 hours after brewing. One ounce has 0.4 net carbs, which is a huge carb-saver!
A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON
The White Russian was conceived in 1949 when a Belgian barkeep at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, Gustave Tops, created this cocktail, along with it’s sister cocktail, the Black Russian, in honor of the then U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg. To make a Black Russian, simply skip the heavy cream. The reason it’s not called the White or Black Belgium? The main ingredient, vodka. Ahh, I got it.
The cocktail surged in popularity after the 1998 release of the Cohen brothers cult classic, The Big Lebowski, where The Dude, aka Jeff Bridges, pretty much drinks White Russians throughout the entire film. That’s all it took for the cocktail to make a comeback, and did it ever.

Hi 👋
Can I replace the Truvia in the strawberry daiquiri with coconut sugar ?
Hi, Kelly! You can replace the Truvia in the simple syrup with coconut sugar, however you will increase net carb counts. 1 tsp coconut sugar contains 4 net carbs – the same amount of carbs as white sugar.
