I’m Joanie, the fourth of nine children, born and raised in Benton Harbor, Michigan during the 50’s and 60’s. My careers have run the gamut from home builder, to web show co-host, to English teacher. I’ve opened the door on a frozen gorilla (an actual, real gorilla) and survived a lighting strike. But my most thrilling adventures are with Mike, my high school sweetheart and husband of 47 years; our children, Amy Robach, co-anchor of ABC’s 20/20, and her husband, Andrew; and Eric Robach MD, and his wife, Michelle. Oh, and eight terrific grandchildren!
I was raised by a Southern mama whose skills in the kitchen are legendary. Every night she prepared dinner for eleven. Our meals were scrumptious and carb-laden: potatoes, rice, noodles, pasta, bread. Mom made fabulous desserts. Every. Single. Night. Dad’s bedtime snack recipe for hungry kids: white bread with margarine, sprinkled with white sugar.
I was constantly eating but always hungry – Every few hours I had to eat something high in carbs or I’d feel weak – and HANGRY! My food choices didn’t change for over 64 years.
Mike and I started strict Keto (no more than 20 net carbs per day) in July of 2017. Although weight loss wasn’t my goal, I dropped a solid 12 pounds, and my weight barely fluctuates more than a pound or two. Mike has lost 15 pounds.
After a year we transitioned into a modified Keto diet, staying between 50-100 net carbs per day. I eat 2-3 nutritious meals a day and snack when I’m hungry. The difference: now I eat and stay full. If you told me that a year ago, I wouldn’t have believed you.
I’m a teacher at heart. I love sharing what I learn – including my mistakes – and hope you find this site informative and inspirational. Welcome to My Keto Home, where you’re always part of the family.
